Workshops on the Porch
Techniques for Painting Ceramic Tiles
Judith Stiles, Instructor Wednesdays, July 20 and 27, 4 to 5:30 PM (limited to 8 participants)
This workshop, taught by Judith Stiles, introduces the basic techniques of painting ceramic tiles using themes found in Wellfleet's history for inspiration, such as oysters, cod fish, and bananas. You will explore the use of colorful glazes on bisque tile using a variety of tools: brushes, ceramic pencils, chalks, and stencils. Each participant will have a 6 x 6 inch tile to glaze which will be fired at the Newcomb Hollow Shop Studio. (Finished tile pick-up after two days). The workshop is open to ages 9 to 99. No artistic experience necessary.
Judith Stiles is the owner of Newcomb Hollow Shop & Gallery and has taught ceramics as a Visiting Professor at Skidmore College and headed the M.F.A. program at Pratt Art Institute. She loves to teach. There is no cost. A suggested donation of $15 or more will support the Wellfleet Historical Society.
The workshops will take place on the porch behind the east wing at the Wellfleet Historical Society, 258 Main St. Wellfleet. Registration
required in advance at the Newcomb Hollow Shop & Gallery, 275 Main

Annual House Tour: Sunday, July 31, 2011, 11am-4pm
The
Annual House Tour is the non-profit Society's major fundraiser. The
Tour will be featuring several interesting houses this year - some old
and some contemporary. The tour requires driving and walking. A
detailed program and map are provided.
Tickets
are $20 each, and may be bought at the Historical Society Museum, 266
Main Street, at Abiyoyo, the Left Bank Gallery and Jules Besch
Stationers - all in the center of Wellfleet - and at the Chamber of
Commerce Information booth in South Wellfleet.
Refreshments will be served throughout the day at the Museum Annex at 258 Main Street.
For

Tickets, when available, can also be picked up at the Society's Museum
by noon on the day of the tour; be warned: they quickly sell out. We
hope to see you on July 31st!

Guided Walking Tours
During
the season the Wellfleet Historical Society conducts twice weekly
walking tours around Wellfleet. On Tuesday and Friday mornings meet at
the Museum at 10:15 a.m. ready to learn some of Wellfleet's lore as you
walk along Wellfleet's streets and hidden lanes. You will discover what
you might have missed before and learn stories of streets you may want
to know. And when the hour and a half stroll is over your $3 fee
includes a visit to the Museum to find more pleasure in the collection
because you have learned so much about the Town.
Self-Guided Audio Walking Tours
The
Society now has self-guided audio walking tours developed by Ernie
Bauer and narrated by Dr. Barbara Prazak. This allows people to take
themselves on their own Wellfleet Walking Tours when our Museum Guides
are not available.
Wellfleet OysterFest
Saturday, October 15 and Sunday, October 16, 2011
The
museum will be open the two days of the festival and will feature
exhibits covering the history of the oyster industry in Wellfleet.

Rick Jacobson, Furniture and Interiors Conservator
Rick
will talk about the identification of furniture by style, age and
construction. He is the co-owner of Wellfleet's own Billingsgate Art and
Antiques. He was a conservator for Sotheby's and has been featured in This Old House, House & Garden, and Architectural Digest. He will have examples of his work for discussion.
July 13 CIVIL WAR MUSIC
Rick Spencer, Executive Director of the Dr. Asbel Woodward Museum Rick
will present the music of Stephen Foster, George Root, Henry Clay Work,
and Daniel Emmett which he will accompany with a 5-string banjo and
guitar. You may sing along.
Aug. 10 SECRET SOCIETIES OF THE LOWER CAPE & WELLFLEET
Ralph Desmond, Presenter Ralph
is an historian, past Master Mason and a researcher of the history of
the secret societies of the Lower Cape and a fascinating raconteur of
his subject.
Sept. 14 AMERICAN SAMPLERS: LITTLE MASTERPIECES: 1620-1840
Henry T. Callan, Antique Dealer, Lecturer, and Appraiser One
of Mr. Callan's specialties is Antique Samplers. He will discuss
their history, beauty, variety and role in early education. Some of the
local samplers will be available for viewing.
Oct. 12 CAPTAIN LORENZO DOW BAKER, FRUIT TRADE PIONEER
Randy Bartlett, Ph. D, Retired History Professor Randy
will talk about one of the most notable members of Wellfleet history
and the person for whom our latest set of period rooms has been named:
Capt. L. D. Baker - fisherman, fruit importer, entrepreneur,
philanthropist, the father of tourism in Wellfleet.
